To achieve these musical goals, eight different musical activities are used:
In addition to the First Steps curriculum, students also participate in a grade level program and complete a listening project. Kindergarten listens to “The Carnival of Animals” by Camille Saint-Saens, first grade completes “Peter and the Wolf” by Sergei Prokofiev, and second grade learns about “The Nutcracker” by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Third Grade: Third grade students work to expand on the basic musical skills learned in kindergarten through second grade. Students in third grade have the opportunity to learn about the instruments of the orchestra and attend a performance given by the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra. In addition, they practice and present a grade level performance. Students in this grade level also learn basic music theory skills in order to play the recorder. Fourth Grade: Fourth grade students continue working on mastering basic musical skills. In general music class, students in fourth grade continue to learn basic music theory skills. They practice music reading through playing the recorder and ukulele. Students also study world music and instruments. Students in fourth grade also have the opportunity to participate in choir as well as an after school music group. |
